So I’m not 100% sure where I’m going with this but I’ve been chatting to a few folks who race R125s in actual race series, and have recently helped tune a couple of them too. Oddly enough both the bikes I helped with are from a fairly similar part of Australia…not sure why that is, maybe they just have good taste 😉
Either way till recently I wasn’t even aware that there really *was* anyone using R125s for any sort of racing, but was obviously *delighted* to find out I was wrong.
Consequently I asked the folks I was chatting to whether I could do a little “profile” bit for the site or whatever. I figured I would have loved to know (earlier) about people racing R125s and I’m sure others would find it inspirational or just interesting too.
Unfortunately, as it turns out racing stuff is largely top-secret because nobody want’s to lose their edge…which, like, ok… that’s fair enough. But still, can we have some cool racing pics of R125s being thrashed?
Fortunately one of these chaps isn’t so secretive. His secret seems to be that he’s just *Fast* (which seems like a pretty solid strategy for racing tbf)
This is Cramy – he’s 26 years old, has been racing for about 5 years and races a gen1 R125 which has been stripped back to the bare essentials for weight and had some sliders added. The bike runs in the “Stock” and “Superlight” class in races hosted by the North Coast Racers Club at the Mountain View Motor Sport Complex, Grafton. He also races a very “built” Ninja 400 and occasionally an Aprilia RS125.
The class restrictions mean he can’t really do much to the bike mods-wise other than an exhaust and a Power commander V, so I guess it’s a class where skill matters more than budget. Over recent weeks we have done a little further work on it (and that IS secret) which seems to have helped.
His last race (just the other weekend), despite getting taken out in a crash near the start, he got back in the race and fought his way right back to finish in 2nd place!
He’s held the lap record for his home track twice – the first time the record stood for two years till (world superbike rider) Lachlan Epis took it Then Cramy recently beat Lachlan’s time but Lachlan was having none of it and came back again.
Tbh if it was me I wouldn’t feel too bad about a pro WSB rider challenging my laptimes xD
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed chatting to racers so far and have learnt a lot too – if you race an R125 or know someone who does and you reckon we should know about – please let me know
Cramy also has a youtube channel with some of his riding, in case you want to see more 🙂
